A Change of Scenery!

4 Nov

I headed down to the bay area again this weekend for a wedding. I am happy to report the BART was back up and running. We got into Berkeley Friday evening and got a great recommendation for a pizza place. We needed to carb-load for our big run tomorrow!

We walked down to BUILD. You build your own pizzas! It was so awesome! We weren’t quite sure what to do. After some looking around and having a fun chat with the owner we hit up the “building bar”.

It was delicious. We were hungry because it was nearly 10 o’clock!

After pizza we checked the walk time to Cream. It was walkable!! YeahYaa!! (The ice cream sandwich place that we went a couple of weeks ago.) There was a much longer line then there was last time but I prepared Dan for it. 🙂

We got up Saturday morning at a decent hour—had breakfast, got changed, and got on the Bart toward San Francisco.

We started at the Ferry Building and cruised down Embarcadero toward the Golden Gate Bridge.

The sun was shinning but still a little foggy when we went up and over Ft. Mason. We could see the bottom of the bridge. Lots of people out running and riding bikes. We had a pretty good headwind from the beginning.

We finally got to the bridge! So.MUCH.FUN! It was nice because only peds were on the eastbound side and the cycles were on the westbound side that made things easier!! The fog had lifted some. It seemed to be some fog in between the bridge and the city.

I needed some more water so we got to the view-point and there was finally a water fountain! We were half way! It was super windy on the bridge.

I was looking forward to not having anymore headwind!! It was also cooler on/near the bridge so I was looking forward to sweating it out a bit and warming up!

We took a couple of pictures and we were on our way back. I was feeling pretty good. Miles 11-13 were tough. I didn’t want to run anymore. Dan had run out of things to talk to me about. I was tired. Luckily he was there or I would have been walking. I was running out of water. I knew there was not another water fountain.

Just before 13 I told Dan I was losing steam fast. We still had 3 miles to go. F***!!!!! Somehow someway I felt a little better at 13.5. Shortly after that I got some cold water and felt better. I just wanted to be done.

15.3 miles done! It was a great run. It was a nice change of scenery! We had so much fun. We had lunch at the Ferry Building and caught the BART back to Berkeley to get cleaned up!
I was just closing my eyes for a minute but Dan insisted I fell asleep. When I told him I did not think so he said he had proof!! I guess I was wrong! 🙂

Any running adventures for you last weekend??

RNR San Fran 1/2 Marathon

9 Apr

Sunday at 7am was the start of the inaugural Rock N Roll San Francisco 1/2 Marathon. Sunday was also my birthday! Now I know most people on their birthday would rather be lazy or relax or do whatever they want. No not me! I am totally crazy and wanted to run a 1/2 marathon on my birthday!

Don decided that we needed to leave the house 2 hours before the race started. Which meant a 4:20 wake up call. I went out to the kitchen to put my bagel in the toast, Happy Birthday Leslie, Sylvester(the cat) ate half of it last night. What?? I ended up having some oatmeal. I have only started to eat oatmeal but I have never tried it before a run. There goes “nothing new on race day!!”

It was still dark. We had lots of time to hang out. Here is Alana and I with Alcatraz in the background as the sun came up:

You may have noticed the giant cupcake on my head?!? Tracy got me this cupcake headband a couple of years ago for my birthday so now I wear it every year. You also may have noticed I plastic wrapped the entire headband because I sweat like a beast and I may have ruined it, if there had not been any “protection.” I also wanted to wear it the rest of the day! 🙂

Plan A: PR 2:08:xx if I was having a fantastic day.
Plan B: 2:10-2:12 Pretty much what I was expecting
Plan C: Anything over 2:12 I would have been happy just as long as the race went good!!

Alana and I decided we were going to run together. I was nervous for multiple reasons. 1-She is fast and strong. But she had a baby(Emilia) 6 months ago. Lucky for me she has not been working on her speed…but she does push the baby stroller!! She is just getting back into racing after doing Boston at 18 weeks pregnant! 2-I did not want to go out too fast and blow up at the end! We decided we were going to run strong and have fun!

Here is the Elevation chart-Not exactly an easy course! 🙂

Onto the race. Alana, Ilana, and I started in corral 10.
We went directly uphill when we started! Dang it! Just ease into it! We went downhill. We had some flats.

First couple of miles we were warming up.
The Golden Gate Bridge was ahead of us. The fog was disappearing as we were getting closer.

We hit some more hills going into Golden Gate Park. Not just some hills. Some steep hills. We had just hit the 5k mark going uphill. We passed a guy who (looked like) taking some coverage of a speed walker. He yelled out I like your cupcake. He asked if it was my birthday. I said yes…but totally out of breath! He ended up signing me Happy Birthday in Italian. What a treat that was. We kept chugging up the hills until we were very close to the bridge.

Another photo-op:

We were at about mile 5 pretty much on track for a 2:10. I am glad that they capped the entrants to 5,000 because it was crowded but not awful on the bridge. We did a far amount of weaving in and out of people. Our pace slowed a bit but the views were amazing.

We hit the half way mark. Had a steep downhill on trail no less. This was the view:

We proceeded to go directly up a steep hill back to the other side of the bridge. We were keeping an eye out for friends that were in front of us and in back of us. We saw Ilana. It was so fun…we screamed to her!!

I had a lot of people comment on my cupcake. A lot of people said Happy Birthday. That was fun!

We were still weaving in and out of people. We wanted to try to get some “free” speed with the slight decline on the bridge. We got to mile 9 just off the bridge. Still feeling good. Had a little more steep downhill than flat gravel trail. At this point I stopped looking at my watch. Just after 10 I was feeling the burn and I know if I had not been running with Alana…I would have slowed down. Dig deep!

The flat gravel lasted maybe another mile and a half?! We hit mile 12 and we were at 1:59. (I only know that cause Alana told me) 🙂 We had to go uphill one last time…someone kill me! A guy did say he liked my muffin hat. That was funny. Another short downhill. We were all of a sudden on flat ground with maybe a quarter-mile to go. We talked about how fun the race was and that we were happy to have run it together!

Monica from Run Eat Repeat passed me right before we hit the finish line. I yelled Go Monica and she waved! I knew she was running the race as well but figured she would be way in front of me. She was one of the “celebrities” I met at the Surf City Expo.

2:10:08! Not a PR but awesome race. I accomplished all of my GOALS! Had such a fun birthday run.

The medal is easily one of my top 3 favorite RNR medals! It has a red ribbon too which is awesome because they are always blue.

I have done a ton of RNR races and this was my favorite so far!! Awesome Course!! Very organized for an inaugural event! Unfortunately they are going to change the course next year.

Have you ever done a RNR race?

What do u like to do on your birthday?

Giants + Goals

6 Apr

I was flying solo into the city today. I checked out the Ferry Building. They have cute shops and good food. I bought this super cute bag. I have to stimulate San Fran’s economy while I am here.

On Saturday they have a Farmers Market. I picked up an apple and a shortbread cookie for my morning snack.

I proceeded to walk down Embarcadero. It was sprinkling. Not awesome! Life will go on. I wanted to go to Boudin to get tomato soup in a sourdough bread bowl. I walked. I walked some more. I thought it was closer to the Ferry Building then it really was. I finally checked my phone(not sure why I did not do that before). I had set myself up to walk down to Pier 39. SHIT! I got my bread bowl and it was delicious.

I headed to AT&T Park via the Muni. I thought I better not walk anymore! 🙂 I met up with Scott and Ilana.

We walked in and to our surprise we got a Buster Posey bobble head. SCORE!!

We had a fun afternoon. The Giants could not pull out a win though! 😦

We had killer tickets. My patient hooked us up! Thanks Mike!

On to bigger things: GOALS!! Tomorrow: half marathon #24. I really wanted it to be #34 on my 34th birthday. But even with my 7 half ironman half marathons, it will only be 32. I am a little short.

1. Do not go out to fast. Start at a 10:00/mile.
2. Use good form on the hills even when I am tired.
3. Increase Pace to 9:40-9:45s Pace it out. Do not get too fast too early.
4. Have fun. Try and take a few pictures (unless I am killing it and will not have time to be doing such activities).

Happy Saturday Night!! I am off to bed early!

Love San Francisco

5 Apr

I love San Francisco!!!

I decided for my 34th birthday that I would run the RNR Inaugural San Francisco 1/2 marathon. I caught my flight down south last night. Had a fun evening catching up with my friends, Don and Alana. Had a great night sleep!

Today we had a leisurely morning. Went for a 2 mile “easy” run with an average pace of 9:22s! Then headed into the city.

Our first stop: PANCHO VILLA. My favorite mexican joint in the bay area. You always know it is good “mexican” food when there is a ton of mexicans eating there! 🙂 I had the super vegetarian burrito.
I have to carb-load right?!? Delicious!!

After eating lunch, we hit up one of my favorite ice cream shops: Bi-Rite!!!
So many flavors…How am I suppose to pick?

If you noticed, I had 3 scoops. (Again I am carb-loading) 🙂 It was ONLY a double but you can get 2-3 flavors. I had salted caramel, malted vanilla, and coffee toffee. Amazing. Never disappoints!

We walked over to Delores Park. Good views of the city. It was a nice day. Cloudy with sun breaks. No jacket. Awesome!!

We headed to the expo.

We hit up the Nuun booth.

Then I bought a pair of Hokas. They were not giving a discount but they were giving out SF Running Company hats. What a deal! HA!

I am super excited to try these shoes out. They are supposed to be better for recovery. I bet you are thinking…they are ugly?! Well you are right! But very comfortable. It will be fun to try them out next week!

I also picked up one of these bad boys.

I have done the distance! It is about time I put this magnet on my car. 🙂

Awesome first day! Excited for the next 2!!

Have you heard of Hokas?

What is your favorite US city?

What is your flavor of ice cream?
