The Portland Tri Club puts on a mock tri every year in May. Today was that day. I participated a couple of times and have volunteered every year since. It is usually right after Wildflower so I can just volunteer and not worry about getting a work out in.
This year Stephanie, from the 6-pack, was the race director so we had no choice to volunteer and do our brick tomorrow.
It is so fun to see how big this event has become. They offer a sprint and Olympic distance flat course. Dan was participating so we got there early. It is a real fast course. It is also fun to see all the different people who come out to “race”. From absolutely first time ever triathletes who are scared shitless to seasoned Ironman just getting in a practice “race.”
I was assigned to be on the bike course. I ended up being at the bike mount and dismount line which was fun to see everyone come through. Just like that they came through again.
There was a “kid” Thomas that Erica helped out in transition who received an entry from his Physics teacher. He was nervous but Erica talked him through what to expect. I met his dad while standing at the mounting line. I checked out his leg to see his age and he was 18 so not really a “kid.” He did the Olympic and had no nutrition with him. His dad went and picked some Gatorade for him. Not sure how that panned out but when I was cheering right before the finish line I saw him before Dan. I guess he did great!! 🙂
Dan did awesome! He looked great with all smiles and finished strong!
Last night at about 8:30 I had a wild hair and decided to make some new rice cakes. Probably because I wasn’t getting ready for an early work out today. It was also my turn to make the rice cakes. Dan had made the coconut blueberry (sweet ones) and Denver omelet (savory ones).
Me: How long does it take to make sticky rice?
Dan: 1/2 hour…why?
Me: I might make some new rice cakes.
Dan: I think that it is a very good idea.
Me: How about the peanut butter and jelly ones?
Dan: I think that it is a very very good idea.
PB & J Rice Cakes
(adapted from: Feed Zone Portables)
3 C uncooked sticky rice
4.5 C water
1 C peanut butter
1 C of your favorite fruit preserves
Combine rice, water, and a dash of salt in a rice cooker and let cook.
When the rice is finished cooking, spread half of it onto a 9×12 (I use a 9×13) baking pan. Press rice into pan.
Use rubber spatula to spread the peanut butter and then the jelly.
Finish by gently pressing the remaining rice over the top.
Let sit for a few minutes, cut into squares, and wrap.
While I was putting them together, Dan was making the wraps.
We wrapped them together. Dan had done it differently the first 2 times around. We were having a hard time looking at the instructions in the book so we took it to Google. Dan found a YouTube video. Genius! We made them perfectly almost perfect.
Dan had one today and said it was amazing. I am so excited to take 1 or 2 on my ride tomorrow!!
Happy Saturday Night! I am watching the shit get kicked out of the Blazers. It is quite sad. Are you watching the basketball playoffs?
I love that mock tri idea! That’s perfect for newbies! I’d be all over that 🙂 Those rice cakes look to die for! Anything pb&j is delicious in my book.
Right!! It was strawberry lemon jelly too! Delicious!! 🙂
The mock tri sounds like a blast! And, rice cakes… yum! I realized this week I can’t eat salty balls because the nut butter doesn’t sit well with my stomach… these could be a good alternative!
Oh No!! What are in the salty balls? Are they sweet? The rice cakes were delicious but I ate 2 today. I think it was too much with all of the other drinks/sugar I was taking in. I think as the rides get longer I will need to have a 1 sweet and 2 or 3 savory ones.
What makes it a mock tri, as opposed to a sprint or Olympic?
The mock tri doesn’t have any timing. You don’t wear a chip and there are no results. If you want to know you can wear a watch.
It is more for newbies to try out the swim(which is usually the most terrifying), and practice transitions without the pressure of doing really well. 🙂
The sprint and Olympic are different distances. (sprint: 400(ish) meter swim; 12 mile bike; 3.1 mile run and the Olympic is double the sprint)
Hope your ride today was good! And thanks for the rice cakes recipe. I’ve never made anything like that before- they sound delicious and easy to eat on the go!
Congrats to dan on his mock race. That’s a wonderful idea for people to get practice without the real race pressure.
Yes! My ride was great! Finally!! 🙂 You should totally make some. Way better to eat actually “food” than just bars and sugar!!
