I started running in ’06. My first half marathon was Eugene(the inaugural). It went really well so we decided to pick another one that was local to Portlandia because that is where I had just moved too. Tracy somehow found Helvetia Half Marathon. We were rookies. We did not know how to look at an elevation map. We just picked the race because it was close!!
We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. One day a few weeks before the race I drove the course. To say the least it was not going to be easy. Super hilly!! If you have done the race you know how bad it is. HARD! I have since done this race and had much better out comes!!
We went on to do it and had a great time but that has continued to be my Personal Worst(PW) half marathon: 2:26:39. You can only get better than that right? Up until you get injured and still want/need to do a race!
If you have been a reader for more than a day, you know that I am getting over a, small overuse soft tissue, injury. I have been working with a PT. I do all of my exercises and stretches like a champ. Like I have nothing better to do…but if it is going to help by all means: I am ALL IN!!
Yesterday was the Surf City 1/2 marathon. I had a loose plan for race day. Not full proof until sunday morning but I was ok with it. I was also fully prepared to walk more if I needed too. I had to do the race because this was the last of the Beach Series Challenge. I was supposed to do the marathon but obviously dropped down to the half.
I knew I was going to do some sort of run/walk but not sure at what intervals: 1:1; 1:2; 2:1; 2:2. I finally decided to do 2:2. I set my garmin to beep at me every 2 minutes. That is not annoying or anything but I did not want to look at my watch constantly! I had planned on running the first 2 miles because I did not want to try to walk with all of those people running on my heels. If i felt good and my ankle was not bothering me I would run the last 1/2 mile or so. I was prepared for a PW. Sub 3 was all I wanted. That was the plan. I was going to stick to it.
Our corral started at 7:50. It was gorgeous out. Perfect day for a race. I just wished I was racing it. I just kept telling myself that there are plenty of races this year. I do not need to compromise this season on this race!
We were off and running. GAME ON! I went out easy. First 2 miles went fast. Sub minutes. AWESOME! Then I got on the regimen. 2 minute run: 2 minute walk for 11.1 miles. Here we go. I quickly thought that the intervals were too long. There was no switching now. I just had to deal with it. The problem was: When I was running it went quick but when I was walking it felt like it took forever!! A few times I would run a little longer if I was going downhill or I would walk through the aid station when I was suppose to be running. At mile 5 I was at 53:xx. Not bad. At mile 8 I was at 1:26. Not bad.
We turned around just after the 8 mile mark and we were running into a head wind for about 2 miles. Which was not fun but not too awful!
I was running faster than I thought I would but it felt good and the ankle was holding up! I walk very fast(in general). My friends hate walking with me. I think that helped the overall pace. I thought that the run/walk really helped too. I had a break when walking. My heart rate settled down and when I had to run again I could push it.
At mile 11 I was at 1:57. This was the point at which I thought this may not be a PW after all! My ankle felt good. I felt good. Just kept cruising along!
Met up with the crew! Received my BIG ASS SURFBOARD medal. Thank goodness there was plenty and Birdlegs did not have to kill anyone!
We had lunch at Avila’s El Ranchito.
We hit up another Matt’s Super Bowl party. Ate more food and drank more beer.
February 2, 2013. An awesome day all-around. It would have been better if the Niners would have won but a good second half come-back!!
Did you watch the Super Bowl? What was your favorite commercial? What was your favorite bad food consumed?
